Dreaming of Mozzarella: Meaning and Curiosities

Like all major topics that somehow stir people's sensibilities in Campania,  mozzarella also finds a place in the  Neapolitan smorfia. The name, derived from the god Morpheus, king of  dreams, is used for the interpretation of dream visions for the lottery: each number is associated with a meaning linked to an image or an event.
With the publication of the revised collection in the "New smorfia of the Unification of Italy" edition, on the initiative of Lottomatica, which thus wanted to celebrate 150 years of tradition,  Buffalo Mozzarella also enters the great book of numbers with 24. But what does  dreaming of mozzarella mean? Interpretations with respective associations to other numbers are rampant on the web: promises of business if you eat it, news or desires to undertake projects if the memory is limited to observing it without consuming it. Even systematization sites for betting end up giving numbers in this whirlwind, finding adherence among the dense public of online gamblers and the superstitious, in a desperate attempt to transform a signal into a win or just to give it meaning.

Mozzarella is delicious when eaten alone, savoring the taste of its extraordinary  milk or seasoned with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and a sprinkle of black pepper. Among the traditional dishes widespread in Campania,  Caprese is one of the most famous and consists of an exceptional marriage between the two most famous ingredients of this region: Mozzarella and tomato, preferably of the typical Sorrentine variety. But it must be said that in common use, mozzarella is also used to season pizzas, pasta, and salads and has never needed Michelin-starred chefs to keep its fans' attention high.

A true Buffalo Mozzarella is truly a dream product.  Dairies know this well and do their utmost to ensure it arrives as fresh as possible everywhere, defying time zones and distances. To satisfy demands, mozzarella undertakes an incredible journey if we consider the path that milk travels every day from farms to processing sites to reach major European capitals and even New York, after traveling kilometers by vans and airplanes. A very delicate product that should be consumed as soon as it is made, perhaps devoured in the place of production amidst the aromas of lactic ferments and stables, but which ends up facing very long journeys and if not treated with due care is exposed to sudden spoilage.

Who is on a diet?

If the scale advises you to lose weight, you won't be forced to see it become a timid memory. If made with cow's milk, a 100-gram mozzarella contains about 250 calories, while buffalo mozzarella has only 20-25 more. For the animal fat content, it can be consumed twice a week for a balanced diet. It contains a source of noble proteins, minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, zinc, potassium, and many vitamins: A, D, and E, and those of the B group.

Mozzarella is a product appreciated in all markets. In Italy as well as abroad. It seems incredible but it is possible to buy it in France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, the United States, and in Eastern European countries such as Poland, Bulgaria, Romania, and Greece. According to the Consorzio della Mozzarella di Bufala Dop, new markets such as China, Lebanon, Singapore, Kuwait, Chile, Peru have also joined, and at Expo Dubai 2021 the sector presented itself with record numbers.
It may have been the cooking shows that flooded the web during these two years of forced closure, but according to the Monitor of Southern Districts, compiled by the Studies and Research Department of Intesa Sanpaolo, among the 15 agri-food districts, at least 13 closed the first half of 2021 with export levels higher than the pre-Covid period. Needless to say, Buffalo Mozzarella from Campania tops the ranking with a +28% compared to the pre-pandemic period and requests from abroad. France is first among them, while requests from China have tripled.
