Buffalo Mozzarella: Best and Worst Pairings
We love buffalo mozzarella in all its forms. Eaten plain, cooked on pizza, or as an ingredient in a variety of dishes, from appetizers to first courses. However, there are some products with which our beloved dairy product pairs particularly well, both in taste and consistency, and others which it is preferable to avoid combining it with. Let's find out.
Best pairings
– Tomato -> This vegetable is the star of one of the quintessential recipes prepared with this delicious dairy product: Caprese salad. The acidity of the tomato perfectly combines with the delicate flavor of buffalo mozzarella, creating a balanced and healthy dish.– Prosciutto crudo (cured ham) - > Prosciutto and mozzarella is the quintessential appetizer of Mediterranean cuisine, often enriched with other cold cuts, melon, grilled vegetables, etc. Buffalo mozzarella, with its lower salt content compared to other types, is the ideal match for a salty ingredient like prosciutto crudo.
–Salad -> Mozzarella is also excellent for enhancing salads. It can be paired with lettuce, arugula, green beans... Its use adds a special touch to any vegetable, giving a decisive and refined flavor even to the simplest recipes.
There are also pairings that were once considered "heresy," but which the world of haute cuisine has now embraced, such as that between fish and cheese. Recently, for example, it has been discovered that buffalo mozzarella pairs very well with smoked salmon, compensating for the intensity of the fish with its delicate flavor. Or, that our "white gold" goes well with a refined taste like that of raw shrimp.
Pairings to avoid
Legumes -> The pairing of dairy products with beans and their cousins is one of the most "discordant," both in flavor and consistency. With legumes, at most, allow yourself a sprinkle of grated Parmesan cheese...
Citrus fruits -> These are certainly not the first foods you would think of associating with buffalo mozzarella. But if you were to have this idea, know that the acidity of oranges and other citrus fruits does not go well with the nature of the dairy product, which, consumed with them, risks becoming indigestible.
